The aim of this site is to let people get to know our town, its monuments and its history.
Lying in the heart of inland Sicily in the Nisseno area, at over 750 meters above sea level, Mussomeli overlooks the mountainous region to the west that separates the two provinces of Caltanissetta and Agrigento, many archeological finds and beautifully crafted and decorated vases have been discovered here, mainly at the Polizzello site. Founded in the 14th century by Manfredi III Chiaramonte with the name of Manfreda, it was later established as part of the county of Aragon and finally became the domain of the Lanza family, Princes of Trabia, today, Mussomeli has a population of about 12,000 inhabitants and its economy relies almost totally on agriculture and farming with the organic production of excellent pecorino cheese; blessed with a mild climate all year round and particularly fresh, healthy air, Mussomeli comes alive during the summer season when the town's emigrants flock back to spend their holidays here; the historic town center is quite clearly medieval in origin, as characterized by its beautiful churches, and many tourists from the neighboring provinces pour in to visit it on a Sunday, on this site, you will find videos of the castle and the old churches, photos, bibliographies, recipes, the history of the castle from its origins to today and the streets in the historic center. |
